Conclusion

Endometriosis of the bowel can lead to large bowel obstruction, and it should be considered in women of reproductive age presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms.

Supporting Evidence

  • Endometriosis occurs in 3-10% of the general female population of reproductive age.
  • Bowel endometriosis is usually asymptomatic but can cause intestinal obstruction.
  • The patient had a history of previous surgeries and symptoms of menstrual irregularity.

Takeaway

A woman had a blockage in her intestines because of endometriosis, which is when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it. After surgery, she felt better and had no more endometriosis.

Methodology

The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy, rectosigmoidectomy, and appendectomy.

Limitations

The diagnosis was made post-surgery, and no pre-operative imaging was performed due to the emergency nature of the case.

Participant Demographics

A 36-year-old Greek woman.
