Hypothesis
To evaluate imprint cytology in the context of specimens with microcalcifications derived from Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy (VABB).
Conclusion
Imprint cytology provides a rapid, accurate preliminary diagnosis in a few minutes.
Supporting Evidence
- The sensitivity and specificity of the cytological imprints for cancer were both 100%.
- Only one case of atypical ductal hyperplasia could be detected by imprint cytology.
- There were no uninformative cases among women with malignancy.
- Imprint cytology can provide a preliminary diagnosis within minutes.
Takeaway
Doctors used a special technique to quickly check for breast cancer in women who had suspicious lumps. It worked really well and helped reduce worry for the patients.
Methodology
93 women underwent VABB, and imprint samples were examined using various staining techniques for rapid diagnosis.
Limitations
The method had difficulty detecting precursor lesions like atypical ductal hyperplasia and lobular neoplasia.
Participant Demographics
Women aged 35–75 years.
