Hypothesis

The study evaluates the treatment burden experienced by middle-aged and older adults living with multiple chronic conditions.

Conclusion

Participants reported less treatment burden than previously reported in international studies, but certain sociodemographic groups experienced high and unsustainable treatment burden.

Supporting Evidence

  • Participants had a mean Treatment Burden Questionnaire score of 20.3 out of 150.
  • 6.6% of respondents reported an unsustainable treatment burden.
  • Administrative and financial tasks were identified as the most burdensome activities.
  • Younger, less educated, and Black and Latino respondents reported higher treatment burdens.

Takeaway

This study looked at how hard it is for older people with many health problems to manage their treatments, and found that some groups have a really tough time.

Methodology

Data from the 2022 Health and Retirement Study was analyzed using the Treatment Burden Questionnaire and various statistical tests.

Limitations

The study may not fully capture the treatment burden experienced by all demographic groups.

Participant Demographics

Mean age 69 years, 62% female, 71% living with 2+ chronic conditions.
