Author Information

Hypothesis
To obtain pilot data on the endometrial histology of Depomedroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) users experiencing breakthrough bleeding (BTB) versus users with amenorrhea.
Conclusion
Chronic endometritis was the most common histologic finding in women experiencing BTB and has not previously been reported.
Supporting Evidence
- Chronic endometritis was found in 35% of women with BTB.
- The proportion of women with various endometrial histologies did not differ significantly between BTB and amenorrhea groups.
- Duration of DMPA use did not correlate with symptoms of BTB or endometrial histology.
Takeaway
This study looked at women using a birth control shot and found that many had a specific type of inflammation in their uterus that wasn't expected.
Methodology
Cross-sectional study with endometrial biopsy from consenting patients who used DMPA for at least 3 months.
Potential Biases
The reliance on negative screening tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea may introduce bias.
Limitations
The study was limited by the small number of patients and the cross-sectional design.
Participant Demographics
Participants included women using DMPA, with varying ages and races, but specific demographics were not detailed.
