Hypothesis
The study investigates the origins of super-small sized large bowel advanced cancers.
Conclusion
The study suggests that super-small sized large bowel advanced cancers are derived from superficial depressed-type or flat elevation-type early colorectal cancers, rather than polyp-type cancers.
Supporting Evidence
- 8 cases of super-small sized large bowel advanced cancers were identified out of 245 total cases.
- 6 of the 8 cases were classified as T2 and 2 as T3 by UICC classification.
- No lymph node metastasis was found in any of the super-small sized cancers.
Takeaway
Doctors found that tiny cancers in the large bowel come from early cancer types that look different from regular polyps.
Methodology
The study analyzed 8 cases of super-small sized large bowel advanced cancers and 65 cases of submucosal cancers using histological examination.
Limitations
The study is limited by its retrospective design and small sample size of super-small sized cancers.
Participant Demographics
Patients were from the Department of Pathology, Juntendo University Shizuoka Hospital, between 2003 and 2005.
