Hypothesis
A two-fold increase in ECM scaffold surface-area relative to the resected ileal segment will achieve comparable bladder capacity increases after augmentation cystoplasty.
Conclusion
Augmentation cystoplasty with porcine urinary bladder matrix resulted in comparable increases in bladder capacity and compliance to those achieved with autogenous ileum.
Supporting Evidence
- Bladder capacity increased by 40±4% after augmentation with ileum.
- Bladder capacity increased by 39.7±6% after augmentation with UBM.
- Compliance values were significantly increased after augmentation with both materials.
Takeaway
Doctors are testing a new material from pig bladders to help fix problems with human bladders, and it seems to work just as well as using parts of the intestine.
Methodology
The study used ovine bladder models to compare bladder capacity and compliance after augmentation cystoplasty with either UBM or detubularised ileum.
Potential Biases
Potential bias due to the mechanical properties of ex vivo bladder and ileal tissue.
Limitations
The study was ex vivo, so long-term clinical outcomes were not assessed.
Participant Demographics
17 female lambs, all 7 months old.
