Hypothesis
Increased proteolysis of IGFBP-3 is associated with advanced stages of primary breast cancer.
Conclusion
The study found that IGFBP-3 proteolysis is significantly higher in patients with advanced stages of breast cancer compared to those with earlier stages.
Supporting Evidence
- 19 patients with invasive cancers showed IGFBP-3 proteolysis above the normal range.
- None of the patients with DCIS or benign conditions had elevated IGFBP-3 proteolysis.
- Patients with Stage IV cancer had the highest levels of IGFBP-3 proteolysis.
Takeaway
The study shows that a protein related to cancer growth is broken down more in patients with larger and more advanced breast tumors.
Methodology
Fasting blood samples were taken from patients, and IGFBP-3 proteolysis was evaluated using Western immunoblot.
Participant Demographics
Patients referred for suspected or manifest breast cancer, including those with ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive cancers.
Statistical Information
P-Value
P = 0.01 for Stage III, P < 0.001 for Stage IV
