Hypothesis

The relationship between dynapenia-obesity and physical function decline differs by nativity among Mexican American older adults.

Conclusion

Dynapenia-obesity is associated with a greater decline in physical function among foreign-born Mexican Americans compared to US-born individuals.

Supporting Evidence

  • Participants with dynapenia only experienced a greater decline in physical function compared to those with no dynapenia or obesity among US-born individuals.
  • Participants with dynapenia-obesity experienced a greater decline in physical function compared to those with no dynapenia or obesity among foreign-born individuals.

Takeaway

Older Mexican Americans who are both weak and obese may have more trouble moving around, especially if they were born outside the US.

Methodology

Data from the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly was used to analyze the relationship between dynapenia-obesity and physical function decline over 12 years.

Participant Demographics

Mexican Americans aged ≥75 years.
