Hypothesis

Vascular alterations occurring in Raynaud phenomenon result in local lower bone quality and QUS values.

Conclusion

Patients with Raynaud phenomenon, especially those with scleroderma, show reduced bone mass and quality as indicated by quantitative ultrasound.

Supporting Evidence

  • Nailfold capillaroscopy revealed minor alterations in 36.8% of patients.
  • Major alterations were found in 37.5% of patients.
  • A higher frequency of low QUS parameters was observed in patients with major capillaroscopy alterations.

Takeaway

This study found that people with Raynaud phenomenon have weaker bones, especially if they have more severe blood vessel changes.

Methodology

The study measured bone ultrasound parameters and performed nailfold capillaroscopy on females with Raynaud phenomenon.

Potential Biases

Potential bias from the clinical evaluation being conducted by a rheumatologist aware of the capillaroscopy results.

Limitations

The study only included females and may not generalize to males.

Participant Demographics

136 females with a mean age of 53.3 years.
