Hypothesis
The study aimed to evaluate the antibiofilm effect of combined sonication treatment with organic acids on polystyrene surfaces.
Conclusion
The combined treatment of sonication with organic acids significantly enhanced the removal of E. coli biofilm from polystyrene surfaces.
Supporting Evidence
- The highest E. coli biofilm inactivation was achieved by combining organic acid and thermosonication at 50 °C for 5 min.
- The reduction in viable cell counts ranged from 0.43 to 6.21 log CFU/mL.
- A significant positive correlation was observed between viable cell counts and optical density measurements.
- Predictive models for biofilm inactivation demonstrated high accuracy with R2 values of 0.84 and 0.80.
Takeaway
This study found that using sound waves and special acids together can help clean off germs from surfaces better than using either one alone.
Methodology
Polystyrene plates with E. coli biofilms were treated with sonication and organic acids at different temperatures and durations, followed by analysis of viable cell counts and optical density.
Limitations
The study did not achieve complete removal of E. coli biofilms from polystyrene surfaces.
