Hypothesis
Immunocytochemistry might assist in the differential diagnosis of lipoma-like well differentiated liposarcomas and large deep-seated lipomas.
Conclusion
MDM2/CDK4 product-based immunophenotyping is a valuable method for categorizing difficult cases of large deep-seated lipomas.
Supporting Evidence
- Ordinary lipomas have a different genetic makeup compared to well differentiated liposarcomas.
- All lipomas displayed a null MDM2/CDK4 phenotype, while all LL-WDL showed MDM2/CDK4 or CDK4 phenotypes.
- Southern blot analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization supported the immunophenotyping data.
Takeaway
Doctors can use a special test to tell the difference between two types of tumors that look similar.
Methodology
21 cases of lipoma-like well differentiated liposarcomas and 19 cases of large deep-seated lipomas were analyzed using immunocytochemistry and other molecular techniques.
