Hypothesis

What are the HPV types and cofactors causing cervical cancer in Peruvian women?

Conclusion

HPV is the main cause of both squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma in Peruvian women.

Supporting Evidence

  • HPV DNA was detected in 95.3% of women with squamous cell carcinoma.
  • HPV DNA was detected in 92.0% of women with adenocarcinoma/adenosquamous carcinoma.
  • Only 17.7% of control women tested positive for HPV DNA.
  • The commonest HPV types found were HPV 16, 18, 31, 52, and 35.
  • Long-term use of oral contraceptives was associated with increased risk.
  • Smoking was also associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer.

Takeaway

This study found that HPV is a major cause of cervical cancer in women from Peru, and that other factors like smoking and long-term use of birth control can also increase risk.

Methodology

A hospital-based case-control study was conducted with interviews and PCR-based assays to detect HPV DNA.

Participant Demographics

198 women with cervical cancer and 196 control women.
