Hypothesis
This study was planned to clarify the in vitro effect of lidocaine and bupivacaine on germ tube formation by Candida albicans isolates from cases of clinical vaginal candidiasis.
Conclusion
Both lidocaine and bupivacaine have a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on germ tube formation by C. albicans, suggesting their potential use in treating genital candidiasis.
Supporting Evidence
- Both lidocaine and bupivacaine showed a dose-dependent inhibition of germ tube formation.
- Bupivacaine was found to be more potent than lidocaine in inhibiting germ tube formation.
- The effect of local anesthetics was pH-independent.
- The study used human serum as a substrate for germ tube production.
Takeaway
The study found that two common pain-relieving drugs can stop a type of yeast from growing in a way that can cause infections.
Methodology
Fourteen C. albicans strains were tested with lidocaine and bupivacaine in various concentrations to observe their effect on germ tube formation.
Limitations
The study only tested clinical isolates and did not explore the effects in vivo.
Participant Demographics
Clinical isolates from microbiologically diagnosed cases of vaginal candidiasis.
