Hypothesis

Neonatal lupus erythematosus can present with cholestasis shortly after birth.

Conclusion

The neonate with neonatal lupus erythematosus showed improvement in jaundice and skin lesions after treatment.

Supporting Evidence

  • The neonate presented with jaundice, skin lesions, and congenital heart block.
  • Both the mother and neonate had high titers of antinuclear antibodies.
  • Treatment with prednisolone improved the thrombocytopenia.

Takeaway

A baby can get sick from antibodies passed from the mother, causing jaundice and skin rashes, but with treatment, he can get better.

Methodology

The case involved clinical examination, serological studies, and treatment with prednisolone and ursodeoxycholic acid.

Limitations

The study is based on a single case report, limiting generalizability.

Participant Demographics

A 5-day-old male neonate born to a clinically asymptomatic mother.
