Hypothesis
This study evaluated how the relative proportion of chitosan to the polyanions alginate and hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose phthalate affects the colloidal properties of mesalazine nanosuspensions.
Conclusion
Chitosan-based polyelectrolyte complexes with alginate and alginate/hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose phthalate can modulate the properties of mesalazine nanosuspensions, enabling the production of particles with tailored characteristics.
Supporting Evidence
- Higher proportions of chitosan relative to the polyanions resulted in smaller, less polydisperse particles.
- The zeta potential inversion was influenced by the relative proportion of chitosan in the system.
- These results were consistent over 30 days and pH exerted an influence on the magnitude of the observed effect.
Takeaway
The study shows that changing the amount of chitosan in a mixture can make tiny medicine particles smaller and more effective for treating diseases.
Methodology
Nanosuspensions were prepared using a bottom-up approach based on acid–base reactions and were modified with chitosan in binary or ternary mixtures with alginate and hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose phthalate.
Limitations
The study may face challenges related to quality control and regulatory issues in the pharmaceutical field.
