Tin-Based Antitumour Drugs: New Developments
Author Information
Author(s): Marcel Gielen
Primary Institution: Free University of Brussels VUB
Hypothesis
The study investigates the antitumour activity of various organotin compounds synthesized at the Free University of Brussels.
Conclusion
Many di- and triorganotin compounds have been found much more active than cis-platin in vitro against two human tumour cell lines.
Supporting Evidence
- Diorganotin compounds showed ID50 values significantly lower than those of cisplatin against MCF-7 and WiDr cancer cell lines.
- Triphenyltin carboxylates were found to be as active as mitomycin C in vitro.
- Di-n-butyltin bis(2,5-dihydroxybenzoate) was comparably active to cisplatin in vivo.
Takeaway
Scientists created new drugs from tin that can fight cancer better than some existing treatments. They found some that work really well in tests.
Methodology
In vitro and in vivo tests were conducted on various organotin compounds to evaluate their antitumour activity.
Limitations
Further work is needed to identify organotin molecules that could be useful as antitumour drugs in the future.
