Hypothesis
Are CD8+ T lymphocytes functionally preserved in autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) recipients despite low CD4+ T cell counts compared to HIV patients?
Conclusion
CD8+ T cells are functionally active in ASCT recipients even with low CD4+ T cell counts, unlike in HIV patients.
Supporting Evidence
- ASCT recipients showed higher levels of mature CD8+ T cells compared to HIV patients.
- CD8+ T cells in ASCT recipients produced more cytokines than those in HIV patients.
- Despite low CD4+ counts, ASCT recipients had a lower risk of opportunistic infections.
Takeaway
This study shows that even when some immune cells are low, others can still work well to help fight infections.
Methodology
The study compared immunologic analyses of 10 patients with CD4 counts below 300, including 5 ASCT recipients and 5 HIV patients.
Potential Biases
Potential selection bias due to the small number of participants.
Limitations
The study had a small sample size and was cross-sectional.
Participant Demographics
5 ASCT recipients (cancer patients) and 5 HIV+ patients, age-matched.
