Hypothesis

What lifestyle development (health education) services do patients want from a hospital setting?

Conclusion

Patients view hospitals as an appropriate setting for health education, but the delivery of such education is currently poor.

Supporting Evidence

  • Over 80% of patients agreed with screening for all risk factors.
  • Only a third of patients reported receiving health education.
  • 87% of patients agreed that hospitals are a good place for health education.

Takeaway

Patients think hospitals should help them learn how to be healthier, but many don't get the help they need.

Methodology

A questionnaire was sent to recently discharged adult hospital patients to assess their experiences and views on health education.

Potential Biases

Smokers were less likely to respond, potentially skewing the results regarding receptivity to health education.

Limitations

The study was conducted in only one hospital, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.

Participant Demographics

190 respondents, 103 females and 87 males, aged 17 to 96.
