Case Report on Conservative Treatment of Early Onset Scoliosis

Sample size: 1 publication Evidence: low

Author Information

Primary Institution: Asklepios Katharina Schroth Spinal Deformities Rehabilitation Centre, Bad Sobernheim, Germany

Hypothesis

Can conservative treatment improve cosmetic appearance in patients with early onset scoliosis while the curve progresses radiologically?

Conclusion

Conservative treatment may improve cosmetic appearance while the curve progresses radiologically.

Supporting Evidence

  • The Cobb angle increased from 60° to 74° thoracic and from 59° to 65° lumbar after treatment.
  • The angle of trunk rotation improved from 13° to 12° thoracic and from 13° to 5° lumbar.
  • Lateral deviation improved from 22.4 mm to 4.6 mm.

Takeaway

A girl with scoliosis got better looking even though her spine got worse on the X-ray. This shows that sometimes how we look can change even if the problem isn't fixed.

Methodology

The patient underwent conservative treatment including outpatient exercises, inpatient rehabilitation, and the Chêneau brace over a period of 27 months.

Limitations

The study is based on a single case report, limiting generalizability.

Participant Demographics

The patient was a 13-year-old girl with early onset scoliosis.
