Hypothesis
The mean cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the cerebral white matter in patients with leuko-araiosis is lower than in patients without, and the mean CBF in patients with dementia is lower than in patients without.
Conclusion
CT perfusion showed reduced white matter CBF and CBV in patients with leuko-araiosis, indicating chronic ischemia as the underlying cause.
Supporting Evidence
- Mean white matter CBF was reduced by 42% in the frontal region for patients with leuko-araiosis.
- Patients with dementia showed a 44% reduction in mean white matter CBF in the frontal region.
- CT perfusion is a valid imaging method for assessing cerebral perfusion changes in patients with dementia.
Takeaway
This study looked at how blood flow in the brain is affected in older people with a condition called leuko-araiosis, finding that their blood flow is lower than in those without the condition.
Methodology
Twenty-one patients with leuko-araiosis and 21 age-matched controls were studied using CT perfusion to assess cerebral blood flow and volume.
Potential Biases
Potential selection bias due to the specific patient referral criteria.
Limitations
The study did not analyze CTP among various types of dementia and had a relatively small sample size.
Participant Demographics
The study included 49 patients, with a mean age of 70.1 years, comprising 27 females (55.1%) and 22 males (44.9%).
