Hypothesis

A large proportion of GDM patients in Sardinia may have an autoimmune origin.

Conclusion

The study suggests that many GDM patients in Sardinia may have an autoimmune cause, differing from the low prevalence of antibodies reported in other parts of Italy.

Supporting Evidence

  • 38.8% of GDM patients tested positive for at least one antibody.
  • Anti-IA2 was found in 29% of GDM patients compared to 7.1% in controls.
  • IAA was present in 14.5% of GDM patients and absent in controls.
  • Pre-gestational weight was significantly lower in antibody-positive GDM patients.

Takeaway

In Sardinia, a lot of pregnant women with diabetes might have a problem with their immune system that attacks their insulin-producing cells.

Methodology

The study tested for specific antibodies in 62 GDM patients and 56 controls matched for age and other factors.

Limitations

The study is preliminary and requires further research with a larger population.

Participant Demographics

All participants were Sardinian women of Sardinian descent, with no history of diabetes.
