Hypothesis

The study aims to investigate serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).

Conclusion

The study found that children with IDDM have higher levels of IL-1β and TNF-α and lower levels of IL-2 and IL-6 compared to healthy controls.

Supporting Evidence

  • Children with IDDM showed significantly higher levels of IL-1β and TNF-α compared to healthy controls.
  • IL-2 and IL-6 levels were significantly lower in children with IDDM.
  • The study found a positive correlation between IL-1β and IL-6 levels in the long-standing IDDM group.
  • Newly diagnosed IDDM patients had elevated IL-1β and TNF-α levels compared to those monitored for a long time.

Takeaway

Kids with diabetes have different levels of certain proteins in their blood that can show how their body is fighting the disease.

Methodology

The study involved 27 children with IDDM and 25 healthy controls, measuring serum cytokine levels using ELISA kits.

Limitations

The study excluded subjects with diabetic complications and other acute or chronic diseases.

Participant Demographics

The study included 12 females and 15 males in the IDDM group, and 11 females and 14 males in the control group, aged 4–17 years.
