Hypothesis
This study investigates the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TRAF1/C5 and PTPN22 genes and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a Han Chinese population.
Conclusion
The study found that genetic variants at the TRAF1/C5 locus are significantly associated with RA in Han Chinese individuals.
Supporting Evidence
- Significant differences in SNPs rs3761847 and rs7021206 at TRAF1/C5 were observed between the case and control groups.
- The risk allele of rs3761847 conferred a 1.28-fold increased likelihood of RA.
- The risk allele of rs7021206 conferred a 1.27-fold increased likelihood of RA.
- Both SNPs showed significant association with RA independent of anti-CCP and RF concentrations.
Takeaway
Scientists found that certain genes are linked to rheumatoid arthritis in people from China, which helps us understand the disease better.
Methodology
The study genotyped SNPs in a cohort of 576 RA patients and 689 controls, comparing allele frequencies using χ2 analysis.
Limitations
The study did not find polymorphism of rs2476601 in the cohort, suggesting it may not be relevant for RA in this population.
Participant Demographics
576 patients with RA and 689 age-matched controls, predominantly Han Chinese.
