Hypothesis
Can first-trimester PAPP-A and free β-hCG levels predict gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and the need for insulin therapy?
Conclusion
Low serum PAPP-A MoM levels are significantly associated with the development of GDM, including insulin-dependent cases.
Supporting Evidence
- 132 women (5.10%) were diagnosed with GDM.
- 84.8% of GDM cases managed their glycemia with dietary changes.
- PAPP-A levels were significantly lower in the GDM group compared to the control group.
- The optimal PAPP-A cut-off value for predicting GDM was identified as 0.815.
Takeaway
This study found that low levels of a specific protein in early pregnancy can help predict if a woman will develop diabetes during pregnancy.
Methodology
This retrospective case-control study analyzed data from 2588 women with singleton pregnancies who underwent first-trimester screening and glucose tolerance tests.
Limitations
The study's retrospective design may limit the generalizability of the findings.
Participant Demographics
Participants were women aged 18 to 45 years with singleton pregnancies.
