Hypothesis

The study investigates whether the expression of the a6/P4 integrin complex is altered in human breast tumors.

Conclusion

The study found that loss of basement membrane components is associated with changes in the expression of the a6/P4 integrin complex in breast cancer.

Supporting Evidence

  • The a6 and P4 subunits colocalize at the basolateral aspect of the epithelium in normal breast tissue.
  • In benign breast lesions, the distribution pattern of a6 and P4 remains mostly unchanged.
  • In primary carcinomas, the expression of both chains is either redistributed or significantly reduced.
  • In metastatic lesions, the expression of the heterodimer is maintained in most lymphonodal foci.

Takeaway

In breast cancer, the way certain proteins are expressed changes when the basement membrane is missing, which might help the cancer spread.

Methodology

The study involved immunohistochemical analysis of surgical biopsies from normal, benign, and malignant breast tissues.
