Are the changes in HIV services provided in Chennai, India, between 2001 and 2006 commensurate with the need?

Conclusion

HIV diagnostic testing services have increased, but counseling services have not expanded at the same rate.

Supporting Evidence

  • Between 2001 and 2006, the number of labs providing HIV diagnostic tests significantly increased (p<0.001).

  • 14.5% of labs reported more than 10 women seeking HIV testing in 2001, which increased to 79.0% in 2006 (p=0.006).

Takeaway

This study shows that more places in Chennai are offering HIV tests now than before, but not enough people are getting the counseling they need.
