Hypothesis
Can we effectively map the diagnosis-related terms describing a sample in the Stanford Tissue Microarray Database to the NCI Thesaurus?
Conclusion
We have demonstrated that we can effectively map the diagnosis-related terms describing a sample in TMAD to the NCI-T, covering about 86% of the samples.
Supporting Evidence
- We mapped 9283 records from TMAD to one or more ontology terms.
- The NCI thesaurus provides terms for about 86% of the samples.
- The mapping enables better querying of tissue microarray data.
Takeaway
The study shows how to organize and label tissue samples better so that researchers can find and use them more easily.
Methodology
We developed methods to map text annotations in TMAD to the NCI thesaurus and deployed tools for ontology-driven querying.
Limitations
The study is limited by the need for a license to use SNOMED-CT and the potential for false negatives in matching.
