Hypothesis

We sought to determine RCAS1 involvement in the origin and progression of gallbladder cancer, and also implications of RCAS1 for patient survival.

Conclusion

High expression of RCAS1 significantly correlated with tumour progression and predicted poor outcome in gallbladder cancer.

Supporting Evidence

  • High expression of RCAS1 was observed in 70% of gallbladder cancers.
  • RCAS1 immunoreactivity was associated with depth of tumour invasion.
  • RCAS1 positivity was an independent negative predictor for survival.

Takeaway

This study found that a protein called RCAS1 is linked to how bad gallbladder cancer can get, and having a lot of it means patients might not do well.

Methodology

RCAS1 expression was examined immunohistochemically in surgically resected gallbladder specimens.
