Hypothesis
ITM application in calves would increase TM status, improve antioxidant and immune responses, grazing behavior, and growth, and reduce stress after weaning.
Conclusion
ITM application at weaning improved Cu and Se status, enhanced antioxidant and immune responses, and reduced stress and inflammation in calves, though it did not affect growth.
Supporting Evidence
- ITM reduced plasma cortisol and haptoglobin concentrations.
- ITM increased plasma concentrations of superoxide dismutase.
- ITM improved serum titer concentrations against IBR and BVDV-2.
- Calves receiving ITM showed reduced seeking time compared to saline.
Takeaway
Giving calves a special mineral shot when they are weaned helps them feel less stressed and boosts their immune system, but it doesn't make them grow faster.
Methodology
Two experiments were conducted with Nellore and Brangus calves, comparing the effects of saline and ITM injections on various health and growth parameters.
Limitations
The study did not observe significant growth differences, possibly due to adequate mineral status prior to the experiment.
Participant Demographics
86 Nellore calves (40 females, 46 males) and 50 Brangus male calves, aged 8 ± 1 month.
