Hypothesis

The study examines the relationship between hearing impairment and vision impairment on physical function among Mexican Americans aged 75 and older.

Conclusion

Mexican American older adults with dual sensory impairment are at a higher risk of developing physical function impairment over time.

Supporting Evidence

  • Participants with hearing impairment only had greater odds of developing physical function impairment over time.
  • Participants with dual sensory impairment had even greater odds of developing physical function impairment.
  • No significant association was found between vision impairment only and physical function impairment.

Takeaway

Older people who have trouble hearing and seeing are more likely to have problems moving around as they get older.

Methodology

The study used Generalized Estimating Equation models to estimate the odds of physical function impairment based on sensory impairments over 12 years.

Limitations

The study may not be generalizable to all older adults due to its focus on a specific population.

Participant Demographics

Mexican Americans aged 75 years and older.
