Hypothesis

Is segmental resection of the duodenum a viable alternative to duodenopancreatectomy for treating duodenal GISTs?

Conclusion

Partial resection of the duodenum is a warranted alternative to a duodenopancreatectomy, as this procedure has a lower operative morbidity while providing comparable oncological results.

Supporting Evidence

  • GISTs are the most frequent mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Only 3–5% of GISTs are localized in the duodenum.
  • The tumor had a diameter of 2.5 cm and <5 mitoses/50 high power fields, indicating a low risk of malignancy.
  • The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged on postoperative day 13.

Takeaway

Doctors can remove part of the duodenum to treat a rare stomach tumor instead of doing a bigger surgery that can cause more problems.

Methodology

The patient underwent emergency laparotomy followed by definitive surgery involving partial resection of the duodenum and duodenojejunostomy.

Limitations

The study is based on a single case report, limiting generalizability.

Participant Demographics

A 29-year-old man with no history of preexisting diseases.
