Hypothesis

The presence of additional functional groups at the bicyclic core of isocoumarins is important for enhancing cytotoxicity.

Conclusion

Isocoumarins and dihydroisocoumarins with only lipophilic residues show significantly decreased cytotoxic activities compared to those with polar groups.

Supporting Evidence

  • Some new isocoumarins showed moderate cytotoxic activities against a human leukemia cell line.
  • Compounds with only lipophilic residues had significantly lower cytotoxicity compared to those with polar groups.

Takeaway

Scientists made new compounds called isocoumarins and tested them to see if they could kill cancer cells. They found that adding certain groups to these compounds helps them work better.

Methodology

The isocoumarins were synthesized using Sonogashira reactions and tested for cytotoxicity using an MTT assay on HL 60 leukemia cells.

Limitations

The study only tested a limited number of compounds and did not explore all possible variations of substituents.
