Hypothesis

The study aims to analyze resistance mutations in the pol gene of HIV–1 isolates from drug–naive Romanian patients.

Conclusion

The prevalence of HIV–1 strains with at least one major drug resistance mutation in the studied group was very high, especially among newly diagnosed patients.

Supporting Evidence

  • 8 out of 12 strains belonged to the F subtype.
  • 6 out of 12 patients had major mutations associated with NRTI resistance.
  • Newly diagnosed patients had a higher prevalence of resistant variants compared to chronically infected ones.

Takeaway

Half of the patients studied had HIV that was resistant to at least one type of medicine, which is surprising because they had never been treated before.

Methodology

The study involved genotyping the HIV–1 pol gene from 12 untreated patients with detectable HIV RNA viral load.

Limitations

The study group was small, which may not reflect the broader situation in Romania.

Participant Demographics

The study included 12 patients, 6 males and 6 females, with a median age of 30.5 years.
