Hypothesis

CD4 T-cells fail to respond to liver-derived antigen presented by liver APCs and develop defective effector function after priming in lymph nodes and spleen.

Conclusion

CD4 T-cells are not activated by liver-derived antigen, which may explain the persistence of CD8 T-cell exhaustion in chronic hepatitis.
