Hypothesis
This study examined and identified differentially expressed genes in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
Conclusion
The majority of identified differentially expressed genes in cutaneous SCC were previously not described.
Supporting Evidence
- The study identified 118 differentially expressed genes in skin cancer.
- 42 genes were found to be up-regulated and 76 down-regulated in cutaneous SCC.
- The expression levels of selected genes were independent of systemic immunosuppression.
Takeaway
The study looked at skin samples to find genes that are different in skin cancer compared to normal skin, and found many new genes that could help us understand the disease better.
Methodology
The study used microarray expression profiling to analyze RNA from skin biopsies of patients with cutaneous SCC and normal skin.
Limitations
The study could not avoid a mixture of dysplastic and non-dysplastic cells in the specimens.
Participant Demographics
Biopsies were obtained from 5 organ-transplanted recipients and 5 age-matched non-immunosuppressed individuals.
