Hypothesis

What if we had eliminated disparities in health in the last century?

Conclusion

Eliminating health disparities could have significantly reduced mortality rates among African Americans.

Supporting Evidence

  • There would have been 83,500 fewer black deaths overall in the year 2000 alone if health disparities had been eliminated.
  • 4,700 fewer black infants would have died in their first year of life if infant mortality had been equal across racial and ethnic groups.
  • 250,000 fewer blacks would have been infected with HIV/AIDS in 2000 if disparities did not exist.

Takeaway

If everyone had the same access to health care, many more African Americans would be alive today.
