Hypothesis

The study aims to evaluate the pharmacological effects of the hydroalcoholic extract of Valeriana prionophylla on sleep disorders and anxiety.

Conclusion

The results suggest that Valeriana prionophylla has anxiolytic, antidepressant, and hypno-sedative effects.

Supporting Evidence

  • VP extract showed a significant increase in time spent in the open arms of the elevated plus-maze, indicating anxiolytic effects.
  • Acute treatment with VP extract decreased immobility time in the forced swimming test, suggesting antidepressant activity.
  • VP extract did not show protective effects against PTZ-induced convulsions.

Takeaway

This study found that a plant called Valeriana prionophylla can help with anxiety and sleep problems.

Methodology

The study used various tests including open field, rota rod, elevated plus-maze, forced swimming, and inhibitory avoidance tests on mice and rats.

Limitations

The study did not assess the effects of higher doses of the extract on convulsions.

Participant Demographics

Nonfasted adult female Swiss mice and male Wistar rats were used.
