Hypothesis
GmbZIP4a/b positively influences nodule formation by promoting the activation of the cytokinin signaling pathway during the early stages of nodule formation.
Conclusion
The study found that GmbZIP4a/b play crucial roles in promoting nodule formation in soybeans by activating the cytokinin signaling pathway during early nodulation stages.
Supporting Evidence
- GmbZIP4a/b are inducible upon rhizobial inoculation.
- Double mutants displayed a reduction in the number of infection threads.
- Nodule fresh weight and nitrogenase activity remained unaffected in the double mutants.
- Transcriptome analyses revealed downregulation of zeatin biosynthesis in gmbzip4a/b mutants post rhizobial inoculation.
- Genes associated with cytokinin signaling were upregulated in the control but not in the mutants.
Takeaway
This study shows that two genes in soybeans help the plant make more nodules, which are important for getting nutrients from the soil.
Methodology
The study used CRISPR/Cas9 to create double mutants of GmbZIP4a/b and assessed nodulation through nodule counts and transcriptome analysis.
Limitations
The study did not explore the later stages of nodule development in detail.
