Hypothesis
This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial resistance patterns of colistin-resistant Escherichia coli and mobilised colistin resistance genes from broiler meat.
Conclusion
The study found a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant E. coli and the mcr-1 gene in poultry products in Bangladesh, posing significant public health concerns.
Supporting Evidence
- 311 out of 570 samples tested positive for E. coli.
- 74.92% of isolates were resistant to colistin.
- 95.18% of isolates were multidrug-resistant.
- All phenotypic colistin-resistant E. coli isolates carried the mcr-1 gene.
Takeaway
The study looked at chicken meat and found a lot of bacteria that don't get killed by important medicines, which can make people sick.
Methodology
The study collected 570 broiler samples from supermarkets and live bird markets, isolating E. coli using bacteriological and molecular techniques, and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility.
Limitations
The study was limited to a specific geographic area and may not represent the entire country.
Participant Demographics
Samples were collected from broiler meats in Chattogram metropolitan areas of Bangladesh.
