Hypothesis
The study aimed to determine the incidence and detailed anatomy of inferior diverticula of the sigmoid sinus.
Conclusion
The paramastoid diverticulum of the sigmoid sinus is an unexpected landmark in the suboccipital region that should not be mistaken for the paramastoid process.
Supporting Evidence
- In 3 female cases (6%), inferior paramastoid diverticula of the sigmoid sinus were found.
- The heights and inner diameters of the diverticula were measured.
- A high jugular bulb was found in each case with a PMDSS.
Takeaway
Doctors found a new part in the brain's plumbing system that could help them avoid mistakes during surgery.
Methodology
The study used archived angioCT files of 50 individuals (25 males and 25 females) to check the morphology of the sigmoid sinus.
Limitations
The study only documented the paramastoid diverticulum of the sigmoid sinus and did not evaluate the complete variational pattern.
Participant Demographics
25 males and 25 females.
