Hypothesis

Can a combined abdominal-perineal surgical approach improve outcomes for patients with vaginal agenesis?

Conclusion

The combined abdominal-perineal surgical approach using a specially designed vaginal mold and Hyalobarrier gel can be successfully performed in patients with vaginal agenesis and a functioning uterus.

Supporting Evidence

  • Vaginal agenesis is a rare condition with an incidence of 1 in 4,000 to 1 in 10,000 females.
  • The surgical technique involved creating a neovagina and using a specially designed mold.
  • Both patients reported regular menses and normal vaginal anatomy at follow-up.

Takeaway

This study shows a new way to help girls born without a vagina by using a special mold and gel during surgery.

Methodology

Two case reports of patients with vaginal agenesis who underwent surgery using a combined abdominal-perineal approach and a specially designed vaginal mold.

Limitations

The study is based on only two cases, which limits the generalizability of the findings.

Participant Demographics

Two female patients aged 14 and 16 with normal female genotype and secondary sexual characteristics.
