Hypothesis
This study aimed to determine the effect that Caralluma fimbriata extract (CFE) had on weight loss and vascular function in mice fed a high-fat diet.
Conclusion
CFE alone or in combination with lorcaserin could serve as an alternative strategy for preventing obesity-related cardiovascular diseases.
Supporting Evidence
- CFE and CFE + LOR treatments significantly reduced weight gain and fat mass deposition.
- A high-fat diet markedly reduced acetylcholine-mediated relaxation and eNOS expression.
- Obese mice treated with CFE exhibited significantly improved relaxation responses and reduced stress markers.
Takeaway
This study found that a natural extract from a plant called Caralluma fimbriata can help mice lose weight and improve their blood vessel function when they eat a high-fat diet.
Methodology
C57BL/6J male mice were fed a high-fat diet for 16 weeks and treated with CFE and lorcaserin to assess weight gain, fat mass, and vascular function.
Limitations
The study was conducted on mice, which may not fully replicate human responses to CFE.
Participant Demographics
C57BL/6J male mice, aged 5 weeks at the start of the study.
